"Cancion del Emperador" (Song of the Emperor): Luys de Narvaez, 1538.
Narvaez composed for the vihuela, a lute-like predecessor of the guitar that
was popular in renaissance Spain. This piece from his *Los Seys (sic) Libros
del Delphin,* is based on Josquin Des Prez's "Mille Regretz," reputedly the
favorite song of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, AKA Charles I of Spain.
Originally written in tablature, the music of Narvaez and other vihuelists
has has since been transcribed into standard musical notation. Some of this
work was arranged for guitar by Emilio Pujol and others in the 1950s or
therabouts. Andres Segovia recorded "Cancion Del Emperador" and several
other vihuela compositions sometime in the 1950s or 60s.
CANCION.MID is a general midi file (type 1) with three tracks, all set for
harpsichord. By convention, music for the guitar is written an octave higher
than played. To preserve some semblance of the original sonority, I've
transposed the guitar score down an octave.
"Cancion" was written more than 400 years ago. I think we can safely
assume it to be in the public domain.
Notes, harangues, advice welcomed.
